Assisted Performance and the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD); a Potential Framework for Providing Surgical Education
نویسنده
چکیده
Purpose: To apply educational models of the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) and approaches to assisted performance to existing knowledge about surgical skill acquisition, and thus provide a framework for potentially enhancing surgical education. Summary: The stages of the ZPD appear to be consistent with existing psychomotor theories of skill acquisition. The fourth phase of the ZPD, where the performance of skills can deteriorate, and which can occur for a number of reasons such as ill health or absence from routine duties, is not well described in the surgical literature. Approaches to assisted performance may provide additional insights into the complexities of how to teach surgical skills, how to approach the process of hand-over of responsibility from teacher to learner, and the importance of enhancing teaching skills of surgical educators. Conclusions: The ZPD and approaches to assisted performance would appear to provide a valuable framework for planning and assessing surgical education programs.

Collaborative L2 Interactivity in Diverse ZPD-Based Proximal Contexts and Interactional Competence Development
Central to Vygotsky-inspired sociocultural theory (SCT) is the notion of ZPD seen by SLA researchers as a useful framework within which L2 teaching and learning can take place. Van Lier (2004) argues that the ZPD could be activated in diverse proximal contexts (PCs) and is not limited to the expert-novice scenario. . This study probed whether Iranian EFL learners' collaborative task performance...

The present study aimed at investigating the possible impact ofZone of Proximal Development (ZPD) on the learners’ performance. Forty-sixIranian university students participated in this study by taking two types of readingcomprehension tests (i.e., the main idea and Wh-question type). The researchersused the Winstep program to analyze the data and estimate the learners’ Raschmeasure in pre, pos...

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) as a new shaking educational development provide the scene for achieving social inclusion and dissemination of knowledge. Anyhow, facilitating network learning experiences through creating an adaptive learning environment can pave the way for this open and energetic way to learning. The present study aimed to explore the possible role of Dynamic Assessment (D...
متن کاملEffect of Storytelling Instruction on Developing Iranian EFL Learners’ Oral Proficiency within ZPD-activated Proximal Context
The application of zone of proximal development (ZPD), as a major tenet of Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory (SCT, 1978), has recently been invited in the L2 learning/teaching profession. This study mainly examined whether Iranian EFL learners’ interactions in diverse ZPD-activated proximal contexts through the use of storytelling instruction could improve their oral (speaking) proficiency and at...
متن کاملInterface between L2 learners’ pragmatic performance, language proficiency, and individual/group ZPD
One of the theories accounting for pragmatic development of L2 learners is Vygotsky’s (1978) sociocultural theory. This study investigated the development of EFL learners' pragmatic competence through the lens of an important concept of Vygotsky’s theory, i.e. the zone of proximal development. The study was conducted to answer two questions. The first question was wheth...
